An Au Pair is a young person whom to improve her knowledge of a language, goes to a foreign country and live with a Host Family for an agreed period.
The Au Pair should have a basic knowledge of the host country language.
The Au Pair helps the Host Family to look after the children and with light housework. In return, she receives board and lodging and a weekly pocket money.
The Au Pair is part of the Host Family with the same rights and same obligations as the other members of the family and they help her to improve her language skills and to know the costumes and culture of the country. Whenever possible the Au Pair will have meals with the Family and will participate in their daily activities.
It should be note that Au Pairs do not enter in the category of employees or students, but they have a special status between both concepts.
The job is often very demanding. Try not to have unrealistic expectations and never be fool into thinking that you are on holiday. Only mature girls should participate in the Au Pair Programme, because they must be responsible for the family’s children, to carry out the daily household duties and confront different habits, meals, characters and schedules. This program demands effort and a lot of patient. Au Pairs must never forget that this is a job and they must accomplish their duties.
Au Pairs will have experiences they would never live if they stayed at home, but they must not forget that they are abroad and they must adapt themselves to the customs and habits of the Host Family.
Yo be an Au Pair is the best way to get to know a language because it has to be spoken every day with the Host Family, in the streets and at the school, allowing the girls to improve their speaking level a lot in a short period of time. At the same time, this experience brings good memories unforgettable and surely friendships that will last a lifetime
Either girls or boys can participate in the Au Pair Programme; however, most families require female au pairs. Boys can be accepted provided they have experience caring for children and doing some housework.
